The council of governors will today elect
a new chairperson to take up the outgoing Bomet governor Isaac Ruto’s two years
in office.
The election
to be done in Nairobi has attracted three candidates including Meru Governor
Peter Munya,his Kakamega counterpart Wycliffe Oparanya,outgoing vice-chairperson
and Kwale Governor Salim Mvruya.
The election
that will be a closed door function is perceived to be a two horse race between
Kakamega’s Wycliffe Oparanya and Peter Munya of Meru.
The new
chairperson is expected to push forward the council’s agenda including the Pesa
Mashinani initiative that was launched last year as well as clear their names
from corruption allegations.
One of the
contestant Salim Mvurya of Kwale is accused by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption
Commission (EACC) of misusing the Counties fund in fueling his personal
vehicles.
The election
has been seen to be a Jubilee Alliance and CORD contest with a faction arguing
that a new chair should come from the opposition.
The outgoing
chair Isaac Ruto is from the Jubilee coalition.
Despite the
fact that CORD has many Governors compared to Jubilee Alliance (24-23), Cord
has two candidates for the seat: Wyclife Oparanya and Salim Mvurya of Kakamega
and Kwale respectively.
The
Council’s Secretariat has hinted that the new chair will be known by midday
today.
Apart from
the chairperson, the council will also install committee’s chairs.
COG has 17 committees head by various
governors.
