HOW TO BECOME A BETTER ON AIR PERSONALITY.
BY NIXCY MURAGE.
1) KNOW YOUR LIMITS
Don't
copycat someone else style, and understand the limits of your own
talent. Be yourself on air your style is unique in its own way.
Listeners will always spot falsehood. Am sure you will agree with me that it is also hard to maintain being someone else.
2) LEARN THE BASICS
Before you try any creative radio, you must have
the basics down. You have to be able to sound convincing. You have to be able to give the station slogan a
ton of different ways. You have to be able to make every break sound
different, even if you're just saying the same thing over and over.
3) LOSE YOUR ACCENT
Learn to recognize your accent and get
rid of it. . I'm talking about your regional accent.Local listeners won't notice if you have the local accent,
but if anyone outside of your area will hear your work, they may notice.
Nobody will ever notice if you completely eliminate your accent.
4) LISTEN
4) LISTEN
Listen to presenters you admire. Listen to national ads. Listen to yourself. You are your own worst critic.
By listening you will know what to eliminate and what to keep.Make yourself your best friend if you can't,ask your friends or other listeners what they think about your presentation on air.
Also learn to take good advice.
5) PRACTICE
5) PRACTICE
Every day. Read newspapers, articles, poems etc out loud.
Do whatever you can to improve your skills. Practice breathing. Practice
standing and talking. Practice sitting and talking.
This will help you become more eloquent and with time you will make the best out of you.
Practice practice makes perfect.
6) BE CONVERSATIONAL
6) BE CONVERSATIONAL
Listeners want to hear someone that sounds like
their friend or neighbor...Not someone that sounds harsh, rude or angry. Stop yelling! It's not important to yell to sound excited. Talk
from your gut, not your throat. Never say "all of you". You're not
talking to a group, you're talking to ONE person. Put a picture of a
friend in front of you, if it helps.
Engage your listeners.
7) PREPARE
7) PREPARE
Know what you want to talk about. Develop an outline for
each break and stick to it.
Once
you've done it for many years, you may not need to prepare as much. Know
the music to play, topics to discuss and when(time) and the lifestyle of the listeners
8) CHECK YOUR EGO
8) CHECK YOUR EGO
Radio people have huge egos...Just like any other
talent-based industry. Just remember, you are NOT the best. You may be
very good, but there's always someone better. Be confident, not cocky.
Watch out!your ego may overcome your presentation and you may not deliver as expected.
9) STAY ACTIVE
9) STAY ACTIVE
Most jocks get to a point and think that they're the
best, so they stop trying...Then they suck and get fired. Always learn
new things, from as many people as you can.
Remember the world is moving so fast that the man who says he is the best is overun by someone else who has already done it.
Do it as if you will never do it again.
PEACE,LOVE AND UNITY!!!
