Hopefully, she is not from that tribe that poisoned your flamboyant uncle, Mpoki. I am not saying you chase her if her ancestors are from that tribe. No. Not at all. All I am saying is that, be careful with her if it already happened.

Look here Kabaa. I leave all the family property in your hands- the ¼ acre piece of land on which this grass-thatched hut of ours rests, two coconut stems, one bare-necked chicken among others. Do not bother much about me, I am a past case. I have had to undergo a lot to raise you on this piece of land. A 53 year old  Karanja Ng'ang'a, suffered leg injuries when his wife attacked him with a baton on Thursday morning following a domestic quarrel. 

Ng'ang'a was rescued by Assistant Chief Kabui Gatimu, who rushed him to Kerugoya Level Five Hospital, where he was treated and discharged.

This was not the first time the wife had and he admitted that he had been suffering in silence beaten him.

Despite the parallels to national politics, campus politics is just not worth the risk and effort .Our own KIMCSO, just like SONU and other student bodies, is not an exception either. I am surprised by the news of students meeting in their associations to strategize on how to capture a seat in the students’ organization.

Ambition is attractive. But hold your horses first. You will need money .A lot of it. You will be spending it faster than The Eurobond.  On the banners and posters that will be torn down by your opponents’ goons, which you will replace oftenly. you will be that sponsor who will buy chapatis for comrades during ‘ githeri Wednesday’, sponsor the liquor for that party held by your supporters. Buy lollipops for the ladies and give them attractive tee shirts printed by you of course!

A lot of money is needed for campaigns

All that spending won’t end there. You will hire cars for that final march. Woe if you have any fee balances. That will be cleared too. If you have strong opponents who have a weakness for cash, you will bribe them not just to stand down in your favor, but to support you as well. You will have to attend various meetings that will be held on a daily basis. On these meetings, you will have to go deep into your pockets to sponsor that soda. You will need to prove to the comrades that you won’t eat their money; that you have enough.

The shop keepers at the campus will love you dearly. Mutua will have saved your number in case of that M-Pesa transaction you will need to settle those debts. Mama Robert’s café will work on overdrive to supply those endless chapatis and other snacks that comrades will consume on the run up to the polls, on your tab of course! Comrades Mall known as ‘Kempinski’ will be opened beyond its operating hours on account of the money which you have been using on those premises.

Then you discover that you are broke and no one is willing to give you any cash. After all, you have shown them how rich you are. So you will have to lay low to avoid those opportunists. Those pests who enjoy your generosity. It will be a cat and mouse game. Hide and seek.

Come Election Day, you narrowly win. But then, you discover that the “access” to money is just a dream. That you will get a mere ksh35,000 annualy! All that hustle and the lies you used to get money will prove futile. Debts will take longer to clear.” What have I got into?” you will ask. So friends, do not rush for them blindly. It is not worth the money in the end. Just ask the losing candidates.

The construction of the hospital, under the First Lady’s Beyond Zero initiative, which is expected to start in the next phase, will be an all-inclusive facility with more focus on maternal and child healthcare.

Mrs. Blair described the First Lady as a practical person who needs support from well-wishers to accomplish her goal of putting up the hospital at a more cost effective manner.  

She presented the First Lady with innovative ideas of designing a hospital aimed at providing vital services to the people who need them and recommended the engagement of International Hospitals Group

She said the group which is known for its objective and personalized approach to each healthcare project would be able to facilitate the First Lady in putting up a modern facility with all the requirements.

Mrs. Blair is in the country courtesy of Safaricom Company with which she has partnered with in a mentorship programme aimed at empowering women.

The Cherie Blair Foundation and Safaricom Company have so far been able to mentor 225 women who are working with communities in Kibera slums.

She said her foundation is using technology to reach out to women so as to help break down cultural barriers and enable them gain skills and confidence they need to excel in life.

Safaricom Chief Executive, Bob Collymore commended the First Lady for being in the forefront championing issues of child and maternal healthcare in the country.

He noted that since she began her Beyond Zero campaign many corporate organizations have come out to partner with her in tackling maternal and child healthcare issues.

The First Lady thanked Mrs Blair for her moral support saying she already has the land for putting up the hospital and that soon the project will take off.

MLAVIDAVI CHRONICLES: DO WE HAVE ENOUGH BLOOD?

One word is enough for a wise man

Politics and tribal affiliations have recently proved notorious for going hand-in-hand in Kenya Institute of Mass Communication. Many myopics might be vocal in opposing this obvious fact, but taciturns will of course question their motivation. 

The hotly contested July 2016 elections that saw Kiongozi (not his real name) swagger into the senior-most student office were in many ways, if not all, smeared with tribalism. The celebrations and other activities that followed this victory confirmed this.

It is not certain whether the school management is aware of this institution-killing menace or not. But from the look of things, there are all reasons to believe that a good fraction of those in office are aware of this but playing blind, deaf and numb. 

Consider a situation where on every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday you have to encounter a public memo drafted in ethnic alphabets directing our esteemed sisters and brothers from the Rift Valley, Gusiiland or Mt. Kenya to converge in BJ1 or DJ1 classrooms. However, our Kisii relatives have off late been stubborn with black and white vernacular posters all over.

Even as I leave this mark of history on this paper, there are public memos at the hostel gates and the students’ mess indirectly informing me that from 8:30 PM, I should not bother looking for any of my Kisii friends, Yusufu Obwoge inclusive. I have no mandate to question that, but the clear-cut contrast between the agenda written in the native languages and what is actually discussed in these forums raises more than a few eyebrows. 

One Tuesday evening after learning a few Gusii vocabularies, renaming myself Maraga and carrying a bunch of bananas, I walked into BJ1 with my friend Yusufu Obwoge to attend one of these meetings and have a feel of what transpires during these infamous sittings.

I must acknowledge the native Kisii, Obwoge, for doing the translation for me. My fears were confirmed. My brothers and sisters from the mentioned land of intellectuals were planning on how to clinch three seats in the July 2017 student elections- the academic secretary, the day representative and the secretary general. To sum it all up, the chair-turned-master-of-ceremony was Kiongozi.

Once bitten twice shy.....

Ethnic groupings and tribal animosity are twin brothers making our beloved country bleed, a clear and most vivid tape being recorded in January 2008. 

It is clear that this monster starts at institutional level, Kenya Institute of Mass Communication inclusive. It is also clear that despite our education system bringing different ethnic backgrounds together, it rarely makes them act together especially on matters of national interest. Politics in Kenya Institute of Mass Communication is a perfect representative of national politics. 

And if this is the picture, Kenya will bleed again come 2017 (God forbid) if stun preventive measures are not taken. The rhetoric question remains, who will act? Who will stand up against this political cancer in our beloved institution and country? Do we have enough blood to bleed? Only God knows.

FRIENDZONED GUYS; GIVE THEM A CHANCE

Don’t you just hate it when that person, whom you clearly love and cherish, makes you an involuntary prisoner at that Siberia of relationships called the friend zone? It is as if all your affection and concern doesn’t count a thing, while that dude who doesn’t give a hoot about her and even hurts her feelings at every turn seems to be getting her love. Her attention. Her favours.

Why is this happening?

Why does this guy end up being friend zoned?

Why don’t ladies just give this guy a chance?

He is the responsible one who always finish their assignments on time. They never miss class and they always dress decently at all times. You will see him waiting patiently at the corridor as his girl talks endlessly with her band of girlfriends. He will act as a sentry to that pretty girl, guarding her drink at the club and of course the missus’ purse while the lady in question twerks and grinds her back to some stranger’s groin on the dance floor. Afterwards, he will carry her drunk useless self out of the club to the safety of his crib after she causes a ruckus with another equally drunk girl who warns her to ‘stay away from her man or else’

The following day, he will clean up after her. The mess she leaves from her puke, whose smell now resembles some decomposing body, will give him answers to why her phone was switched off since lunchtime until their club date that she insisted to. Since he practices the virtues of ‘forgive and forget’ he would let the whole episode slide without a fuss.

This guy would never embarrass himself in public by saying obscenities. He will carefully measure his words and will zip up his mouth until the appropriate time. Neither will he argue with the girl of his dreams. He values peace and stability. And more often, he will remain mum even as the memsahib complains about this or when she flirts with other men in his presence, which he hates but can’t do anything about it.

He will be there when she comes to his room, crying after she was dumped by that jerk of a man who is the captain of the rugby team. In her lowest moment, she would recall the special things that our friend zoned guy did to her and she would feel guilty. In ‘appreciation’ she would allow him to sample her cookie jar and when he thinks that all is well, he gets shocked when a week later, he sees her whatsapp profile picture and status. It’s not about him but some other guy who will later break her heart before the end of semester exams commence.

She will still claim to love him, but her actions will betray her words. To her, our friend zoned guy  will always be that last resort. That fall back plan in case everything goes wrong. All her assignments will be done by him. In  the exam room, she would mark her territory fiercely by warding off that Sylvia who has been eyeing him all along or that drunk fool Cedric, who always calls her choice words whenever they tag him along on their ‘dates’.

When the results are out in the new semester and she is sure that no re sit awaits her, the arrangement ends. The sleepovers will become a distant memory and so will the sex. She will be at her game; chasing the college hunks and the jerks. She will come back for that ‘mourning’ period when she gets heartbroken, or when her body is sore after that rough session with that weed smoking dude, who has  experimented on her those overrated gymnastics he watches from pornhub.

So for all that rant, dear ladies, if you don’t feel this guy, better let him go from the start. Don’t subject him to such de humanizing treatment in the name of Friend zone. Taking shameless advantage of his kindness, generosity and understanding nature while still chasing after that hunk you will never have in ten lifetimes. Give him a chance when there is still time. You never know, one day you will realize that you had a diamond while you were still looking for stones. Give him a chance. I say it again. Give him a chance!!!     

     

HOW COLLEGE LIFE OPENS UP A SHY GUY.

You probably have seen this kind of a guy in your life.

That one who never looks at you in the eye and always keeps to himself all the time as if allergic to conversations.

Some are fashion handicapped and most are the skinny types.

Either you find them huddled together in a game café or they are the lone ranger types but when they step into campus, they change.

In a moment, I will show you how.

Let’s use Sam as an example.

Sam is an eighteen year old who is just out of school.

You can tell by the acne riddled face that, after a few months away from those horrible cosmetics, he has a semblance to a worn out sandpaper.

Now some traces of beard sprout from his once smooth chin.

He wants to be a film producer, that career full of the most extroverted souls and why not? For after four years of intense study and good old luck, he scores impressive grades that surprise his parents and friends alike.

That’s one reason why the Kenya Institute of Mass Communication [KIMC] didn’t hesitate to admit him come September a few months later.

Upon admission, he gets the big break of his late teenage life with KIMC becoming an eye opener for him.

It is here where he comes face to face with the next crop of media personalities.

Already, he has developed a liking to a Nubian beauty with that fine piece of artwork behind her.

Just then, another one sashays past him.

This one leaves him confused and awestruck.

Was that Huddah Monroe? He wonders.

Eventually at the end of the second week of orientation at the preview theatre, he already has friends and not just his three roomies, but a beauty who is also a fresher like him.

Lady luck seems to be smiling at him. Chemistry develops between them but note, not the type which you can quantify like some titration experiment while using the mole concept.

The attraction is made even sweeter by his fat pocket, courtesy of that village fundraising ceremony that catapulted him to KIMC.

Our boy Sam takes her out to sample the streets of South B.

Mind you, Sam is not dumb. How he chooses Gwen (his love) is no rocket science.

He knows he can’t get one of those outspoken town born and raised brats who speak with clipped accents and wear dresses with shorter hemlines.

He also can’t understand why they take too much selfies everywhere and every time he walks past them, he wonders if KIMC is really a construction site judging by the heavy application of foundation on their faces.

Sam knows that the competition for such ladies is cut throat.

He also won’t go for the ‘plain Jane’ type of girls, which unfortunately are the majority here.

Teenegers partying.

No need of bringing back the memories of that painful rejection he had suffered under a similar girl back in the village.

So he settles for the seemingly shy and demure girl who only opens up to a trusted group only, which he now belongs to.

So come October, Sam will have cracked the cherry with Gwen while his roommates dance the night away at club Piccolina during Fresher’s night.

His dressing also changes. Out with the safari bots and the funny looking shirts.

Now he wears the latest timbaland and Gucci shoes.

His once accent- riddled English is now polished and peppered with the latest quotes from the books he has read from the KIMC library and as a result has landed him a show at the institute’s famed ECN radio.

By now, Gwen is a distant memory to him. So whenever she goes home to relax, our confident Sam makes passes at her friends.

Of course ladies are a smart lot. Gwen will know of double dealing ways courtesy of her loyal best friend who Sam had made a tactical blunder when he made a silly pass at her.

As I said before, lady luck was and still is smiling at him.

Sam is spared that tongue lashing by Gwen, since, by now, she is seeing that hunk from Kenyatta University and by coincidence, that responsible dude with a nice job at the Bank in the central business district.

So she will just adopt a ‘hear no evil, see no evil’ attitude and that is how Sam will get away with it.

When November gets midway, Sam has already discovered his old friends from High school.

He has now known the owner of that neat row of wholesale shops, his communication skills lecturer, a homeboy!

Even at the KIMC mess will notice his change.

Now he has a new crew that share similar interests with him. The once shy guy will be seen hovering around ‘lovers’ corner’ chatting with anybody who gives him attention.

Sam will return home a changed person as soon as the institute closes for the December holiday and in the process will make new friends and enemies, who will loathe him for his new status.

In addition, he will be a hot prospect to those high school girls who simply can’t get enough of him.

The local music scene will also get a taste of his KIMC- acquired skills as well as the inside story of how life in the best media training institute feels like.

President Uhuru Kenyatta met African leaders yesterday to support for foreign affairs cabinet secretary Amina Mohamed, Kenya's candidate for the post of chairperson of the African Union Commission.

He met 30 leaders on the global climate change summit held in the Mediterranean city of Marrakech, Morocco.

Among the leaders were those from Nigeria, Gabon, Rwanda, Seychelles, the Comoros, Sudan, Senegal and Chad.

President Kenyatta departed early today from Menara International Airport Marrakech.

Deputy President William Ruto has also reached out directly to more than 35 countries on the President's expedition to build a consent around the candidature of Amb. Mohamed, Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs.

A mayor from West Virginia has resigned amid a furor over a racist Facebook post that described First Lady Michelle Obama as an "ape in heels," US media said.

Beverly Whaling, the mayor of the tiny town of Clay, had appeared to applaud the incendiary comment and stepped down on Tuesday amid the ensuing firestorm, according to a town official, Joe Coleman.

Clay County Development Corp. director Pamela Ramsey had reportedly posted after Donald Trump's election: "It will be refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady in the White House.”

"I'm tired of seeing an Ape in heels."

Mayor Whaling responded: "Just made my day Pam."

The comments were later deleted and both women's Facebook pages were eventually taken offline, The Washington Post reported, citing local media.

Ramsey was also reportedly fired.
