Government compensates the recently resettled Maasai community at Kedong ranch
The government through the ministry of energy has today issued a 105
million cheque to compensate the Maasai community at Kedong ranch.
This comes after the forceful eviction and destruction of property it
caused when more room was needed for geothermal exploration by the
Kenya Electricity generating company (KENGEN) which affected about 150
families.
Speaking at the event, Member of Parliament John Kihagi said the
compensation was very important since it showed that Kenya is a
litigate country and liberal too. “Every citizen has their rights and
they should be observed. “He said
He also pleaded to the ministry of energy on behalf of the affected
families to give land to the Maasai so they could move from the
project area.
The chief Geologist Minister of energy Hon. John Omenge ensured
citizens through an interview with the press that the Olkaria land
where the eviction took place was legally theirs.”It has been under 25
year litigation but was confirmed that it was legal “He said.
He also added that there were three kinds of compensations
1 Money for the property destroyed
2 Lands taken and they were bought by the maasai
3 losses incurred during destruction
He ensured a 600km squared land to resettle them.500 for the families
and 100 for others.
One of the Maasai elders Jackson Oringe really thanked the government
through the ministry for their merciful thought and compensation.
He also convinced the press that him and the elders have sat and
spoken to the maasais about the money usage to ensure they do not
waste it on alcohol and drugs that would otherwise cause criminal
offences.
The meeting that was held at the Morendat training and conference
centre was well attended by the minister for energy, John Omenge, Mp
of Naivasha John Kihagi Maasai at Kedong ranch and their elders
