NYERI MCAs BIG EARNINGS FOR LACK OF SESSION PARTICIPATION

                                                               Patricia Kebirungi
It seems that being an MCA and seating around does really pay big money. Nyeri ward representatives are skipping assembly sittings but still earning millions in allowances!
The House is hit by low attendance as the ward representatives start campaigns to defend their seats. Seats they do not work hard to serve and maintain.
On average, 10 out of the 47 MCAs attend assembly sessions which run from Tuesday to Thursday. Since the Assembly resumed on February 9, 2016, the opening session lasted only 10 minutes with less than five MCAs in attendance forcing the Speaker to adjourn the sittings thrice due to lack of quorum.
In February 2016, a report by the controller of budget indicated that Nyeri County has the highest spending rates in allowance payment. In 2015, taxpayers’ money amounting to Sh19.6 million was set aside to cover siting allowances for the MCAs.
The MCAs only arrive, attend the session for a few minutes while others only sign the attendance register and pick a bottle of water and leave knowing that a share of the allowance will be in their bank accounts.
